When does Ovulation Occur?

Ovulation usually takes place 14 or 15 days after the start of your menstrual cycle (day 14 or day 15). The exact time of ovulation within your menstrual cycle is determined by your luteal phase, which is usually 12 to 16 days long. You can calculate when your ovulation will occur within your cycle by subtracting the length of your luteal phase from the length of your cycle. For example, if your cycle is 28 days long and your luteal phase is 14 days long, as is typical, your ovulation will occur on the 14th or 15th day of your cycle. Your ovulation may vary from cycle to cycle, due to a number of factors such as stress, illness, diet, or increased physical activity.

Your fertile period starts approximately 4 to 5 days before ovulation, and ends approximately 12 to 48 hours after it. This is due to the fact that sperm can survive in your body for approximately 4 to 5 days, and your egg can survive for 12 to 48 hours after being released. While you are fertile for 5 to 7 days, you are most fertile on the day before and the day of ovulation. Knowing your fertile days can help you increase your chances of getting pregnant, or avoid an unwanted pregnancy.
